Office of Readings for Friday in Ordinary Time, for the Memorial of Saint Padre Pio, Priest

God, come to my assistance.
Lord, make haste to help me.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.

The King of love my shepherd is,
Whose goodness fails me never.
I nothing lack if I am His,
and He is mine forever.

Where streams of living water flow,
my ransomed soul He's leading;
and where the verdant pastures grow,
with food celestial feeding.

Perverse and foolish, oft I strayed,
but yet in love He sought me;
and on His shoulder gently laid,
and home, rejoicing, brought me.

In death's dark vale I fear no ill,
with You, dear Lord, beside me;
Your rod and staff my comfort still,
Your cross before to guide me.

You spread a table in my sight;
Your unction grace bestowing;
and oh, what transport of delight
from Your pure chalice flowing!

And so through all the length of days,
Your goodness fails me never;
Good Shepherd, may I sing Your praise
within Your house forever.

Ant. 1 Rise up, Lord, and come to my aid.

Psalm 35
The Lord as Savior in time of persecution

They came together… and laid their plans to capture Jesus by treachery and put him to death (Matthew 26:3-4).

O Lord, plead my cause against my foes;
fight those who fight me.
Take up your buckler and shield;
arise to help me.

O Lord, say to my soul:
“I am your salvation.”

But my soul shall be joyful in the Lord
and rejoice in his salvation.
My whole being will say:
“Lord, who is like you
who rescue the weak from the strong
and the poor from the oppressor?”

Lying witnesses arise
and accuse me unjustly.
They repay me evil for good:
my soul is forlorn.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Ant. Rise up, Lord, and come to my aid.

Ant. 2 All-powerful Lord, stand by me and defend me.

When they were sick I went into mourning,
afflicted with fasting.
My prayer was ever on my lips,
as for a brother, a friend.
I went as though mourning a mother,
bowed down with grief.

Now that I am in trouble they gather,
they gather and mock me.
They take me by surprise and strike me
and tear me to pieces.
They provoke me with mockery on mockery
and gnash their teeth.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Ant. All-powerful Lord, stand by me and defend me.

Ant. 3 My tongue will speak of your goodness all the day long.

O Lord, how long will you look on?
Come to my rescue!
Save my life from these raging beasts,
my soul from these lions.
I will thank you in the great assembly,
amid the throng I will praise you.

Do not let my lying foes
rejoice over me.
Do not let those who hate me unjustly
wink eyes at each other.

O Lord, you have seen, do not be silent,
do not stand afar off!
Awake, stir to my defense,
to my cause, O God!

Let there be joy for those who love my cause.
Let them say without end:
“Great is the Lord who delights
in the peace of his servant.”
Then my tongue shall speak of your justice,
all day long of your praise.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Lord, you rescue the poor from their oppressors, and you rose to the aid of your beloved Son against those who unjustly sought his life. Look on your Church as we journey to you, that the poor and weak may recognize the help you provide and proclaim your saving acts.

Ant. My tongue will speak of your goodness all the day long.

Sacred Silence (indicated by a bell) – a moment to reflect and receive in our hearts the full resonance of the voice of the Holy Spirit and to unite our personal prayer more closely with the word of God and public voice of the Church.

You will hear the word from my mouth.
You will tell others what I have said.

First reading
From the book of the prophet Ezekiel
40:1-4; 43:1-12; 44:6-9
The vision of the restoration of Israel and the temple

On the tenth day of the month beginning the twenty-fifth year of our exile, fourteen years after the city was taken, that very day the hand of the Lord came upon me and brought me in divine visions to the land of Israel, where he set me down on a very high mountain. On it there seemed to be a city being built before me.

When he had brought me there, all at once I saw a man whose appearance was that of bronze; he was standing in the gate, holding a linen cord and a measuring rod. The man said to me, “Son of man, look carefully and listen intently, and pay strict attention to all that I will show you, for you have been brought here so that I might show it to you. Tell the house of Israel all that you see.”

Then he led me to the gate which faces the east, and there I saw the glory of the God of Israel coming from the east. I heard a sound like the roaring of many waters, and the earth shone with his glory. The vision was like that which I had seen when he came to destroy the city, and like that which I had seen by the river Chebar. I fell prone as the glory of the Lord entered the temple by way of the gate which faces the east, but spirit lifted me up and brought me to the inner court. And I saw that the temple was filled with the glory of the Lord.

Then I heard someone speaking to me from the temple, while the man stood beside me. The voice said to me: Son of man, this is where my throne shall be, this is where I will set the soles of my feet; here I will dwell among the Israelites forever. Never again shall they and their kings profane my holy name with their harlotries and with the corpses of their kings [their high places]. When they placed their threshold against my threshold and their doorpost next to mine, so that only a wall was between us, they profaned my holy name by their abominable deeds; therefore I consumed them in my wrath. From now on they shall put far from me their harlotry and the corpses of their kings, and I will dwell in their midst forever.

As for you, son of man, describe the temple to the house of Israel [that they may be ashamed of their sins], both its measurements and its design; [and if they are ashamed of all that they have done,] make known to them the form and design of the temple, its exits and entrances, all its statutes and laws; write these down for them to see, that they may carefully observe all its laws and statutes. This is the law of the temple: its whole surrounding area on the mountain top shall be most sacred.

Say to that rebellious house, the house of Israel: Thus says the Lord God: Enough of all these abominations of yours, O house of Israel! You have admitted foreigners, uncircumcised both in heart and flesh, to my sanctuary to profane it when you offered me food, fat, and blood; thus you have broken my covenant by all your abominations. Instead of caring for the service of my temple, you have appointed such as these to serve me in my sanctuary in your stead. Thus says the Lord God: No foreigners, uncircumcised in heart and in flesh, shall ever enter my sanctuary; none of the foreigners who live among the Israelites.

RESPONSORY Ezekiel 43:4-5; see Luke 2:27

The glory of the Lord entered the temple by the eastward gate,
and the house of God was filled with his splendor.

His parents took the Child Jesus into the temple.
And the house of God was filled with his splendor.

Second reading
From the decree on the ministry and life of priests of the Second Vatican Council
The priestly vocation to perfection

By the sacrament of Orders priests are formed in the image of Christ the Priest, to be ministers of Christ the Head in constructing and building up his whole Body, the Church, as fellow-workers with the order of bishops. In the consecration of baptism they have already received, in common with all Christians, the sign and gift of so great a vocation and grace that, even in their human weakness, they have the power, and the duty, to seek perfection, in accordance with our Lord’s words: Be perfect, then, as your Father in heaven is also perfect.

Priests are obligated in a special way to acquire this perfection. By receiving holy Orders they have been consecrated in a new way, and made living instruments of Christ the eternal Priest, so as to be able to continue through the years Christ’s wonderful work which, by divine power, has restored to wholeness the entire family of man.

Since each priest acts, as far as he may, in the person of Christ himself, he is given special grace to help him grow toward the perfection of the one whose role he plays, as he ministers to his flock and the whole people of God. He receives grace for the healing of human weakness from the holiness of Christ, who became for us a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners.

Christ, whom the Father sanctified, that is, consecrated, and sent into the world, gave himself for us, to redeem us from all sin, and to purify for himself an acceptable people, zealous for good works. So, through his passion he entered into his glory. In the same way, priests, consecrated as they are by the anointing of the Holy Spirit and sent by Christ, put an end in their lives to the sins of our selfish nature, and give themselves wholly to the service of mankind, and so are enabled to grow to perfect manhood in the holiness with which they are enriched in Christ. As they exercise the ministry of the Spirit and of holiness, they are strengthened in the spiritual life, provided that they are docile to Christ’s Spirit, who gives them life and is their guide. By the sacred actions they perform daily, and by their entire ministry in communion with their bishop and fellow-priests, they are set on the way that leads to perfection.

The holiness of priests is itself an important contribution to the fruitfulness of their ministry. It is true that God’s grace can effect the work of salvation even through unworthy ministers, but God ordinarily prefers to show his wonders by means of those who are more submissive to the inspiration and guidance of the Holy Spirit, and, who through close union with Christ and holiness of life, are able to say with Saint Paul: I live, but no longer is it I who live, it is Christ who lives within me.

RESPONSORY 1 Thessalonians 2:8; Galatians 4:19

I have longed to give you the Gospel, and more than that, to give you my very life;
you have become very dear to me.

My little children, I am like a mother giving birth to you, until Christ is formed in you.
You have become very dear to me.

Almighty ever-living God,
who, by a singular grace,
gave the Priest Saint Pius
a share in the Cross of your Son
and, by means of his ministry,
renewed the wonders of your mercy,
grant that through his intercession
we may be united constantly to the sufferings of Christ,
and so brought happily to the glory of the resurrection.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.

ACCLAMATION (at least in the communal celebration)

Let us praise the Lord.
And give him thanks.

  1. Padre Pio’s Advice for Therapy and Healing:
    Kneel down and render the tribute of your presence and devotion to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Confide all your needs to him, along with those of others. Speak to him with filial abandonment, give free rein to your heart, and give him complete freedom to work in you as he thinks best.

  2. Lord, we have continued to break covenant with You and deserve, instead of Your Mercy, damnation to hell. Even among our priests and religious, we have those who do abominable deeds. What do we have to offer You but our nothingness and misery?

    This is why You raise great souls like Padre Pio who mirrors the Christ perfectly, Living and dying and fighting the good fight on our behalf.

    On this Feast Day of Your Beloved Pio of Pietrelcina,
    through the infinite merits of our Lord and Redeemer, of Mary Full of Grace and the chaste and obedient Joseph,
    we beg You to fulfill Padre Pio’r desires
    – to protect the Church and the Papacy from error and
    – to make Priests and Religious holy,
    – to convert non Christians to Jesus,
    – to save us sinners from the fires of hell,
    – to empty purgatory, and
    – to thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits with the great
    St. Michael, the Archangel.

    Dear God, we are totally helpless and dependent on You. Circumcise our hearts and with the inspiration and guidance of the Holy Spirit, and through close union with Christ and Padre Pio, help us reach holiness of life and be able to say with Saint Paul: I live, but no longer is it I who live, it is Christ who lives within me.

    Mary, Maker of Saints, help us, Amen.

  3. St. Padre Pio intercede for us. I pray for the victims of Nigeria, the victims of Uvalde, Texas, and the victims of Giza, Egypt. I pray for the end of the war between the Ukraine and Russia in Jesus’ name. St. Padre Pio pray for us.

  4. O Almighty Eternal God our Father, look upon the face of Your Son, and for love of Him Who is the Eternal High Priest, and in honor of your chosen priests, St. Padre Pio, have pity on your priests. Remember O most compassionate God,
    that they are but weak and frail human beings. Stir up in them
    the grace of their vocation which is in them, so that they may never do anything in the slightest degree unworthy of their
    sublime vocation.

    O Jesus, Our Eternal High Priest, we pray:
    — for Your faithful and fervent PRIESTS;
    — for Your unfaithful and tepid PRIESTS;
    — for Your PRIESTS laboring at home or abroad in distant mission fields;
    — for Your tempted PRIESTS;
    — for Your young PRIESTS;
    — for Your dying PRIESTS;
    — for the souls of Your PRIESTS in Purgatory.

    But above all, we commend to You:
    — the PRIESTS dearest to us;
    — the PRIEST who baptized us;
    — the PRIESTS who absolved us from our sins;
    — the PRIESTS at whose MASSES we assist;
    — the PRIESTS who taught and instructed us about You and Your Holy Scriptures;
    — the PRIESTS who helped and encouraged us to accept You as our Lord
    — and all the PRIESTS whom You sent to touch our lives and and those of our loved ones.

    We Pray For:
    The Holy Father, fill him with Your grace, Lord;
    Cardinals, Archbishops and Bishops, give them your gifts, Lord;
    Diocesan Priests, never leave them, Lord;
    Priests in seminary work, give them Your wisdom, Lord;
    Priests in hospital work, give them constancy, Lord;

    Priests who are ill, heal them, Lord;
    Priests in danger, deliver them, Lord;
    Priests who are weak, strengthen them, Lord;
    Priests who are poor, relieve them, Lord;
    Priests who are zealous. help them, Lord;

    Priests who want to love You, enkindle their hearts, Lord;
    Priests who are sad, console them, Lord;
    Priests who are worried, give them peace, Lord;
    Priests who are old, sustain them, Lord;
    Priests who are young,.impel them for your glory, Lord;

    Priests who are alone, accompany them, Lord;
    Missionary priests, protect them, Lord
    Priests who are preachers, enlighten them, Lord;
    Priests who direct souls, instruct them, Lord;
    Parish priests, make them perfect, Lord;
    Priests and religious who have died, bring them to Glory, Lord;
    All the Church, militant and suffering, Lord, have mercy.

    We thank you, God our Father, for those who have responded to your call to priestly ministry. Accept this prayer we offer on their behalf: Fill your priests with the sure knowledge of your love. Open their hearts to the power and consolation of the Holy Spirit. Lead them to new depths of union with your Son. Increase in them profound faith in the Sacraments they celebrate as they nourish, strengthen and heal us.

    Lord Jesus Christ, grant that these, your priests, may inspire us to strive for holiness by the power of their example, as men of prayer who ponder your word and follow your will.

    O Mary, Mother of Christ and our mother, guard with your maternal care these chosen ones, so dear to the Heart of your Son. Intercede for our priests that, offering the Sacrifice of your Son, they may be conformed more each day to the image of your Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

    Thank You God for the holy lives of St. Padre Pio and of all Your Saints. Thank You ad infinitum. Grant us the grace to be like them, fully surrendered to Your Divine Will, Amen.

  5. St pio help us achieve the deep love of christ you had and the spirit of humility and simplicity and love for prayer and conversing with God. Happy Feast Day. We love you

  6. St. Pio of Pietrelcina

    Padre Pio’s Life and Stigmata inspire us to follow Christ closely and to transform suffering.

    Prayer. Healing Jesus, may the wounds and life of Padre Pio remind us of Your Presence in every person.
