Morning Prayer for the Feast of Saint Matthias, Apostle

God, come to my assistance.
Lord, make haste to help me.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.

HYMN

Christ Jesus, Lord, true Light of Light
Begotten Son of God most high,
You sent the Twelve afar to teach
And spread the faith throughout the world.

You sent them special gifts and grace,
And sent them out the world to win
To bring the gospel's truth to all,
Its seed to scatter far and wide.

Appeased by your apostles' prayer,
Be gracious to us Lord, we pray,
Smile down on us as we rejoice
To celebrate their feast today.

By their great merits keep us safe
From every snare of sin and death,
Since we preserve in faithful hearts
The holy teaching they proclaimed.

With face serene look down on us,
Correct us with your loving gaze,
That we may conquer by your grace
The evils that beset our way.

All glory be to you, O Lord,
Beyond the limits of all time,
Who by your true apostles' words,
Lead us, your children, safely home. Amen.

PSALMODY

Ant. 1 My commandment is this: love one another as I have loved you, alleluia.

Psalm 63:2-9
A soul thirsting for God

Whoever has left the darkness of sin yearns for God.

O God, you are my God, for you I long;
for you my soul is thirsting.
My body pines for you
like a dry, weary land without water.
So I gaze on you in the sanctuary
to see your strength and your glory.

For your love is better than life,
my lips will speak your praise.
So I will bless you all my life,
in your name I will lift up my hands.
My soul shall be filled as with a banquet,
my mouth shall praise you with joy.

On my bed I remember you.
On you I muse through the night
for you have been my help;
in the shadow of your wings I rejoice.
My soul clings to you;
your right hand holds me fast.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Psalm-prayer

Father, creator of unfailing light, give that same light to those who call to you. May our lips praise you; our lives proclaim your goodness; our work give you honor, and our voices celebrate you for ever.

Ant. My commandment is this: love one another as I have loved you, alleluia.

Ant.2 There is no greater love than to lay down your life for your friends, alleluia.

Canticle – Daniel 3:57-88, 56
Let all creatures praise the Lord

All you servants of the Lord, sing praise to him (Revelation 19:5).

Bless the Lord, all you works of the Lord.
Praise and exalt him above all forever.
Angels of the Lord, bless the Lord.
You heavens, bless the Lord.
All you waters above the heavens, bless the Lord.
All you hosts of the Lord, bless the Lord.
Sun and moon, bless the Lord.
Stars of heaven, bless the Lord.

Every shower and dew, bless the Lord.
All you winds, bless the Lord.
Fire and heat, bless the Lord.
Cold and chill, bless the Lord.
Dew and rain, bless the Lord.
Frost and chill, bless the Lord.
Ice and snow, bless the Lord.
Nights and days, bless the Lord.
Light and darkness, bless the Lord.
Lightnings and clouds, bless the Lord.

Let the earth bless the Lord.
Praise and exalt him above all forever.
Mountains and hills, bless the Lord.
Everything growing from the earth, bless the Lord.
You springs, bless the Lord.

Seas and rivers, bless the Lord.
You dolphins and all water creatures, bless the Lord.
All you birds of the air, bless the Lord.
All you beasts, wild and tame, bless the Lord.
You sons of men, bless the Lord.

O Israel, bless the Lord.
Praise and exalt him above all forever.
Priests of the Lord, bless the Lord.
Servants of the Lord, bless the Lord.
Spirits and souls of the just, bless the Lord.
Holy men of humble heart, bless the Lord.
Hananiah, Azariah, Mishael, bless the Lord.
Praise and exalt him above all forever.

Let us bless the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Let us praise and exalt him above all forever.
Blessed are you, Lord, in the firmament of heaven.
Praiseworthy and glorious and exalted above all forever.

Ant. There is no greater love than to lay down your life for your friends, alleluia.

Ant. 3 You are my friends, says the Lord, if you do what I command you, alleluia.

Psalm 149
The joy of God’s holy people.

Let the sons of the Church, the children of the new people, rejoice in Christ, their King (Hesychius).

Sing a new song to the Lord,
his praise in the assembly of the faithful.
Let Israel rejoice in its maker,
let Zion’s sons exult in their king.
Let them praise his name with dancing
and make music with timbrel and harp.

For the Lord takes delight in his people.
He crowns the poor with salvation.
Let the faithful rejoice in their glory,
shout for joy and take their rest.
Let the praise of God be on their lips
and a two-edged sword in their hand,

to deal out vengeance to the nations
and punishment on all the peoples;
to bind their kings in chains
and their nobles in fetters of iron;
to carry out the sentence pre-ordained;
this honor is for all his faithful.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Psalm-prayer

Let Israel rejoice in you, Lord, and acknowledge you as creator and redeemer. We put our trust in your faithfulness and proclaim the wonderful truths of salvation. May your loving kindness embrace us now and for ever.

Ant. You are my friends, says the Lord, if you do what I command you, alleluia.

READING Ephesians 2:19-22

You are strangers and aliens no longer. No, you are fellow citizens of the saints and members of the household of God. You form a building which rises on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the capstone. Through him the whole structure is fitted together and takes shape as a holy temple in the Lord; in him you are being built into this temple, to become a dwelling place for God in the Spirit.

Sacred Silence (indicated by a bell) – a moment to reflect and receive in our hearts the full resonance of the voice of the Holy Spirit and to unite our personal prayer more closely with the word of God and public voice of the Church.

RESPONSORY

You have made them rulers over all the earth, alleluia, alleluia.
You have made them rulers over all the earth, alleluia, alleluia.

They will always remember your name, O Lord,
alleluia, alleluia.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
You have made them rulers over all the earth, alleluia, alleluia.

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

Ant. We must choose someone who was with us all the time that the Lord Jesus lived among us; he will take his place with us in giving witness to the Lord’s resurrection, alleluia.

Luke 1:68 – 79
The Messiah and his forerunner

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;
he has come to his people and set them free.
He has raised up for us a mighty savior,
born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old
that he would save us from our enemies,
from the hands of all who hate us.
He promised to show mercy to our fathers
and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:
to set us free from the hands of our enemies,
free to worship him without fear,
holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High;
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
to give his people knowledge of salvation
by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Ant. We must choose someone who was with us all the time that the Lord Jesus lived among us; he will take his place with us in giving witness to the Lord’s resurrection, alleluia.

INTERCESSIONS

Beloved friends, we have inherited heaven along with the apostles. Let us give thanks to the Father for all his gifts:
The company of apostles praises you, O Lord.

Praise be to you, Lord, for the banquet of Christ’s body and blood given us through the apostles,
which refreshes us and gives us life.
The company of apostles praises you, O Lord.

Praise be to you, Lord, for the feast of your word prepared for us by the apostles,
giving us light and joy.
The company of apostles praises you, O Lord.

Praise be to you, Lord, for your holy Church, founded on the apostles,
where we are gathered together into your community.
The company of apostles praises you, O Lord.

Praise be to you, Lord, for the cleansing power of baptism and penance that you have entrusted to your apostles,
through which we are cleansed of our sins.
The company of apostles praises you, O Lord.

Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

Concluding Prayer

O God,
who assigned Saint Matthias
a place in the college of Apostles,
grant us, through his intercession, that,
rejoicing at how your love has been allotted to us,
we may merit to be numbered among the elect.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

DISMISSAL

May the Lord bless us,
protect us from all evil and bring us to everlasting life.
Amen.

  8. The greatest attribute of God is His Mercy and Love. He asks us to Trust in Him. In the Chaplet closing prayer, it says in the words of St Faustina, we are not to be discouraged. Because we do not always understand God’s way, it can be difficult to see those we love so much, hurting and suffering. Jesus personally asked us to trust in Him. Your need and prayer touches my heart deeply. We all here, join with you as if holding hands with you right there, asking for God’s incredible and fathomless Mercy to hear and answer these, our prayers for you. May God bless you, through the Holy Name of Jesus and the tender intercession of His Mother Mary and St Matthias.

  9. Father God, I bow before you this morning and lift up to you John, and his father, Thomas. Just like the man who was brought to you for healing and lowered on a mat through the ceiling by his friends to reach you, we the prayer warriors of this community bring before you John and ask for You, Jesus, Our Divine Physician to lay your healing hands upon him. We know Lord that you are greater than any report or diagnosis he has received and you are working miracles. Please go before him to all his caregivers. By the power of your Holy Spirit, please give them clarity of thought, wisdom, right judgement, skill to their hands, compassion to their hearts to give him the best medical care possible. Please send a heavenly host of your mighty angels to surround him and his loved ones, especially in those Gethsemane moments, to guard, guide and comfort them during these hours of great need. Please give Thomas, his earthly father, the words to speak that are soothing and bring his son comfort and love and lead him always to eternal life. For you are our God Almighty with whom nothing is impossible. Amen

    • Just wanted to say this was a beautiful prayer. I agree with you and pray this prayer for John,Thomas and their family. If I may, I also offer the words of your prayer for my father, Frank (83), who was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer a year ago, still undergoing various treatments. He also has developed a bone infection in a hammer toe wound that has not healed in a years time despite topical treatments and the doctors cannot seem to communicate well, delaying the decision of how best to proceed in further care.

Lord, save our souls foremost and heal our bodies according to your holy will. May we offer our sufferings for the salvation of souls, reparation for sins and the reunion of all Christians. We place our trust in You! Amen!

    • Amen, amen and amen. Heavenly Father, at times it is difficult to know that you are watching over us. Help us to know you are there in all your glory even though we cannot see it. Father, please give John and Thomas and their community of believers all the light they need in this dark hour.

    • Mr. Peterson. It touches my heart to know you turn to this community in your time of need. We are friends in Christ and will share our hearts with you through prayer.

  12. Thanks you! It helps me in my prayer life now that I am attending to my sick and aged mother.
