Habemus Papam! for Not available
Cardinal Robert Prevost of the United States has been selected as the next pope, the first American pontiff in history. A native of Chicago and Augustinian missionary who worked for years in Peru, the new Pope Leo XIV had been working at the Vatican as prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops under the late Pope Francis.
In his first remarks as pope from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, he said to the crowd in St. Peter’s Square: “Peace be with you all.”
“This is the first greetings of the resurrected Christ, the good shepherd who has given up his life for God,” he said, explaining the choice of his greeting. “And I should also like this greeting of peace to enter our hearts and our families.”
God our Father,
we thank You for the gift of a new Pope.
Together we pray for Pope Leo XIV,
we pray that You pour out Your Spirit upon him,
may he be an example of faith, hope, unity and love in our troubled world.
Amen.
