Night Prayer for Thursday in Lent

God, come to my assistance.
Lord, make haste to help me.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Examination of conscience:

We are called to have a clear conscience toward God and toward men, in our hearts and in our minds, in our actions and inactions. To do so, it is vital that we examine our conscience daily and to ask for God’s mercy as we fall short and to ask for His strength to do better.

Lord Jesus raise us to new life:
Lord, have mercy.
Lord have mercy.

Lord Jesus, you forgive us our sins:
Christ, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.

Lord Jesus you feed us with your body and blood:
Lord, have mercy.
Lord have mercy.

Praise to the Lord, the almighty, the king of creation!
O my soul, praise him, for he is your health and salvation!
Let all who hear, now to his temple draw near;
Joining in glad adoration.

Praise to the Lord, who over all things is wondrously reigning;
And, as on wings of an eagle, uplifting, sustaining.
Have you not seen all that is needful has been
Sent by his gracious ordaining?

Praise to the Lord, who will prosper your work and defend you;
Surely his goodness and mercy shall daily attend you.
Ponder anew what the Almighty can do
As with his love he befriends you.

Praise to the Lord, O let all that is in me adore him!
All that has life and breath, come now with praises before him.
Let the Amen sound from his people again,
Gladly forever adore Him.

Ant. 1 In you, my God, my body will rest in hope.

Psalm 16
God is my portion, my inheritance

The Father raised up Jesus from the dead and broke the bonds of death (Acts 2:24).

Preserve me, God, I take refuge in you.
I say to the Lord: “You are my God.
My happiness lies in you alone.”

He has put into my heart a marvelous love
for the faithful ones who dwell in his land.
Those who choose other gods increase their sorrows.
Never will I offer their offerings of blood.
Never will I take their name upon my lips.

O Lord, it is you who are my portion and cup;
it is you yourself who are my prize.
The lot marked out for me is my delight:
welcome indeed the heritage that falls to me!

I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel,
who even at night directs my heart.
I keep the Lord ever in my sight:
since he is at my right hand, I shall stand firm.

And so my heart rejoices, my soul is glad;
even my body shall rest in safety.
For you will not leave my soul among the dead,
nor let your beloved know decay.

You will show me the path of life,
the fullness of joy in your presence,
at your right hand happiness for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Ant. In you, my God, my body will rest in hope.

READING 1 Thessalonians 5:23

May the God of peace make you perfect in holiness. May he preserve you whole and entire, spirit, soul, and body, irreproachable at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.

You have redeemed us, Lord God of truth.
I commend my spirit.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.

Ant. Protect us, Lord, as we stay awake; watch over us as we sleep, that awake, we may keep watch with Christ, and asleep, rest in his peace.

Luke 2:29-32
Christ is the light of the nations and the glory of Israel

Lord, now you let your servant go in peace;
your word has been fulfilled:

my own eyes have seen the salvation
which you have prepared in the sight of every people:

a light to reveal you to the nations
and the glory of your people Israel.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Ant. Protect us, Lord, as we stay awake; watch over us as we sleep, that awake, we may keep watch with Christ, and asleep, rest in his peace.

Concluding Prayer

Lord God,
send peaceful sleep
to refresh our tired bodies.
May your help always renew us
and keep us strong in your service.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.

May the all-powerful Lord grant us a restful night and a peaceful death.

Antiphon or song in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Ave Maria, gratia plena
Maria, gratia plena

Et benedictus
Et benedictus fructus ventris
Ventris tui, Jesus
Ave Maria!

Ave Maria Mater Dei
Ora pro nobis peccatoribus
Ora, ora pro nobis

In hora mortis, nostrae
In hora mortis mortis nostrae
In hora mortis, nostrae
Ave Maria!

English Translation

Hail Mary, full of grace,
the Lord is with thee,
blessed art thou amongst women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.

  10. Please pray for me, a wretched sinner, who is having great difficulty in accepting God’s magnificent, merciful, and forgiving love. I tend to wallow in my guilt instead of conforming my will to His. Whatever I have done and did not do, i have confessed. But I believe that my priests are too easy on me. I do not deserve God’s love and forgiveness but He gives it to freely. He came for me; He loves me as if I were the only person in the world. Why don’t I trust that? He’s too tremendous a lover. Please pray for me so I can sing again, His little unworthy sparrow. Thank you.

    • Hi, edenj, your comments really touched my heart. I will pray for you. EASTER 2019 will be the day I will start my fourth year as a Roman Catholic. I have been a believer in Jesus Christ since I was a little boy. I made a public profession of faith in Jesus and was baptized into the Baptist Church at age fourteen. I will be eighty years old in July. For many, many years Satan made me feel exactly as you feel. I knew it was a lie, but as Satan can come as an “Angel of Light”, it did not “feel” like a lie, but it WAS and IS a LIE, an instrument of Satanic deceit! About twenty years ago, I decided to treat those thoughts as such. When I confessed my faith to Jesus Christ and His forgiveness, as opposed to believing the the lie of Satan, sometimes over and over, I found peace. When I acknowledged it as a LIE and not the TRUTH, I had a lot of victory by the power of the HOLY SPIRIT. I have even more victory as a Catholic with a Vicar of Jesus Christ to confess to and council with. Satan will still use it because he knows that to be a weakness. I relate it to the story of the LOVE of the FATHER in the story of The Prodigal Son. I am not a theologian and if any of this is not theologically correct, please correct me! I think you would enjoy Archbishop Wilton Gregory’s homily on the Prodigal Son. It may be the best sermon I have ever heard on the Prodigal Son. You can google it on YouTube.Sorry so long. I’m not very good at condensing. GOD will bless YOU! Daniel

      • I meant above, “If any of this is theologically INCORRECT, PLEASE correct me! Thanks and God’s blessings. Daniel

      • Daniel,

Beautifully said brother. Guilt is from the devil once we have accepted forgiveness in Jesus.

edenj pray that God will send His Holy Angels to dwell with you.

  11. Please keep in your prayers my dear friend Karen McDonald from Seattle. Her husband and I, the three of us, we’re very close in our earlier years. I just learned that she is now in hospice care. May our lord be close to her in her final hours.

  12. O Lord God protect & guide us to the right path of life. Thank you Lord God Jesus Christ I will always follow you to life eternity .amen.

  13. As always, God is wonderful. He confides us into the arms and envelopment of the mantle of the Mother of His Son Jesus as we go to rest for the night. What indeed do I fear sleeping in Mary’s arms under Her mantle of Grace! Lord continue to protect me each night under the mantle of Mary the loving Mother of Your Son and our Mother. Ansi soit-il!
