Optional Memorial
St. John of God was born in 1495 in Portugal. After a devout upbringing, he became a soldier. Under Charles V, he fought valiantly but at the age of 40, desired a new life. He returned to Spain and spread the faith selling religious tracts and artworks. In Granada, he met St. John of Avila, who influenced him to devote the rest of his life to serving the poor. Pope Alexander VIII canonized him in 1690. [1][2][3]
