Optional Memorial
Saints Cosmas and Damian, twins, were early Christian physicians who practiced in Asia Minor in the 3rd century. They accepted no money for their services and converted a great many to Christ by their generosity. According to one account, when Diocletian’s persecution began, the twins and three of their siblings held firm to the faith and were beheaded. After their death, Emperor Justinian I rebuilt a church in their honor at Constantinople, which became a celebrated place of pilgrimage. Saints Cosmas and Damian are the patron saints of the medical professional and are included in the Canon of the Mass and the Litany of the Saints. [1]
